Description

Emma Carroll is the author of Letters from the Lighthouse, a 2018 historical fiction novel set in World War II. At first, Olive is unsure about Esther as she is different to the other children and comes across as cold and uninviting.

The main theme of Letters from the Lighthouse is the importance of family, friendship, and loyalty in the face of adversity. The mystery at the heart of the story holds an ongoing fascination, absorbing the reader with each little 'reveal'.My main critique is that the pace of the book seems to soar at some points meaning particular sections feel rushed. Set during WWII, we follow Olive and Cliff as they’re evacuated to the coast of Devon after months of heavy air raids across London. This asymmetric character structure gives the story room to delve into the deep-rooted prejudices often faced by refugees, as seen through the eyes of open-minded children. A main focus of the story is the growing friendship between Olive and a Jewish refugee named Esther.

Tocmai de aceea, părinții își trimit copiii singuri, în zonele rurale, pentru a îi salva un pic de la toată trauma pe care o provoacă un război de o asemenea amploare. Olive thinks that her mother and sister Sukie are both dead but soon she finds out the truth - her sister is in grave danger. I felt transported into World War II: the rushing when there was an air-raid siren, why some children wanted to be evacuated and why some children did not, living with rationing and experiencing different lifestyles once evacuated. The characters and their rapport are genuine and gently handled, painted with a full sense of each of every person so that the reader really knows who they are.

Your children will be challenged to find synonyms of words used in the story, identify verbs and adverbs, look up definitions and provide explanations to terms and phrases. After discovering a strangely coded message that she’s certain has something to do with Sukie’s disappearance, Olive embarks on a dangerous adventure as she’s determined to get to the bottom of the mystery. Adult characters initially treat a downed German pilot in a threatening manner, including spitting at him. Your KS2 children will have the opportunity to punctuate the text using colons and also identify when a colon has been used accurately.
