Brown wrote the book with the help of Kathleen McGurl, a historical fiction author who has written 13 books of her own, including a forthcoming novel. Nineteen Steps follows in the footsteps of Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale and Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See by dramatizing something that really happened in the East London community-driven, lower-class neighborhood of Bethnal Green in 1943. It’s an event so powerful that it’s hard to believe it hasn’t been the subject of a novel — or film — previously.
