The book was named the 53rd most banned book from 1990-1999 by the American Library Association, and its sale and marketing in Germany was restricted from 1995 to 2000. norman mailer (who tried, and failed, to create an american psycho type book with his an american dream) complains that easton ellis offers no alternative to the 'flat, insipid' life of patrick bateman. is also a description of today's world, then bad writing becomes an ingenious mimesis of a bad world. One supposes that the last freethinking men of ancient Sumer, lamenting that cuneiform had ruined their political discourse, must have longed for the good old days of throwing rocks at each other’s heads.

It was impossible to form any kind of emotional connection with him and, because of the first person narration, it was also impossible to form much of an emotional connection with anything or anyone else in the novel.

In a particularly absurd episode, he is chased by a squad car after his random shooting of a busker, commandeers a cab (killing its driver), crashes into a Korean deli, kills a cop who tries to disarm him, escapes from the armed police who seem to have him surrounded, shoots dead a janitor and a night watchman in a nearby building, and (as a Swat team arrives in a helicopter, just too late) sits in his office confessing his crimes ("thirty, forty, a hundred murders") to his lawyer's answering machine. He really feels for White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who was asked to leave a restaurant in Virginia last summer. Several passages recycle or embellish material from the past few years, including a baffling 2011 essay for Newsweek on the difference between “Empire” and “post-Empire” celebrity that reads like Marshall McLuhan without the rigor.so it's a moment of hilarious revelation when we realize that what jason wanted her to get off of, of course, was her phone.
